Research Associate in Prototyping of Wireless Communications and Wireless Power Transfer

Imperial College London - Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Fixed term appointment for up to one year

Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the EEE Department, Imperial College London. The research is conducted as part of an EPSRC Impact Acceleration funded project on “Power over WiFi”. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) via radio-frequency radiation has long been regarded as a possibility for energising low-power devices in the internet of things. It is, however, not until recently that WPT has become recognised as feasible, due to reductions in power requirements of electronics.

The real challenge with WPT is to find ways to increase the DC power level at the energy harvester output without increasing the transmit power. The project will focus on the prototyping of an entire closed-loop wireless power transfer architecture based on off-the-shelf components, and will complement the existing theoretical activities held in the group on communications and signals design for WPT.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Wireless Communications and should demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in the design, measurement, prototyping and experimentation of RF communication systems (ideally using off-the-shelf components), including multi-antenna processing, channel estimation and phased array radio frontend. You also should be familiar with Labview and National Instruments equipment. Good written and oral communication skills in English are essential.

Duties and responsibilities

The duties involve carrying out research programmes in wireless communications and wireless power transfer, undertaking project management and/or supervising multi-disciplinary teams. In addition, the Research Associate will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.

*Candidates who have not yet been awarded their PhD will initially be appointed at the Research Assistant level within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
