MPhil/PhD Studentship: Social relationships during gender identity transition: An investigation of key factors and test of an intervention

University of Exeter - College of Life and Environmental Sciences

Rapidly rising numbers of people in the UK are seeking services from gender identity clinics. In order to deliver optimal services, it is critical that providers understand factors influencing health and well-being for people undergoing gender reassignment procedures. Critically, transgender individuals face potential disruption of key social relationships with family, friends, romantic partners and others throughout the transition process. The extent to which these social relationships are affected has important implications for positive adjustment during and after transition. The primary aims of this project are to examine biopsychosocial factors influencing social networks for individuals undergoing gender reassignment and to potentially develop a new clinical approach designed to bolster social relationships among this population. Partnering with the West of England Specialist Gender Identity Clinic (the Laurels), we will undertake a program of research focused on the experiences of service users and their social networks, examining factors such as cultural processes and social stigma, exposure to oestrogens and androgens (hormones related to important social processes), and identity-related factors that influence gendered relational schemas (e.g., pronoun usage, discursive norms).
