Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Ocean and Climate Dynamics (Heat Uptake)

University of Oxford - Department of Physics

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in  Ocean and Climate Dynamics (Heat Uptake).

The post is available initially for a fixed-term until 30 September 2021.

This project will focus on a new estimates and understanding of ocean heat content (OHC) changes.

The successful candidate will join the Climate & Ocean Physics Group led by Prof Zanna as part of the TICTOC project coordinated by Dr Elaine McDonagh (NOC). TICTOC includes six UK institutions and several international partners.

The postholder will develop a new understanding of ocean heat content (OHC) changes by developing new conceptual models and producing new estimates of OHC, splitting it into contributions from excess energy in the climate system and from the redistribution by the ocean circulation using transient tracers and Green’s functions. The goal is to ultimately refine our theory and projections of 21st-century dynamic sea level change and ocean heat uptake.

Duties will also include reporting on results and progress including publication of papers and presentations at conferences, workshops etc. The postholder will also be expected to develop new ideas, maintain up to date knowledge of research in relevant areas and to actively contribute to the intellectual life of the dynamic research group. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should possess, or be close to obtaining a doctorate in physical, mathematical, computational or engineering  science or a related field.

Previous experience in modelling of the ocean, atmosphere or a nonlinear system of comparable complexity will be an advantage.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong physical insight and analytical ability, drive and ability to perform original research of international standing, as well as an understanding of essential physical oceanography and climate dynamics.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Prof Laure Zanna (

Only applications received before midday (UK time) 16th May 2018 can be considered. You will be required to upload a  CV with  an  up-to-date  publication  list, a  brief  statement of current research interests,  a  supporting  statement and details of three referees as part of your online application.
