Research Fellow in Ensemble Weather Forecasting for Africa

University of Leeds - Faculty of Environment

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in tropical meteorology, weather forecasting, model evaluation, or a related field? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities?

As part of the major new African Science for Weather Information and Forecasting Techniques (African-SWIFT) project an exciting opportunity has arisen for a postdoctoral researcher to lead the evaluation and testing of novel convective-scale ensemble weather forecasts for Africa and to use the forecast data for fundamental research into the predictability of convective storms.

Forecasting convective storms on weather timescales remains a grand challenge in the atmospheric sciences. African-SWIFT is a £7.8 million programme of research and capability building funded by Research Councils UK that seeks to develop sustainable African weather forecasting capability to enhance the livelihood of African populations and improve the economies of their countries. Supervised by Dr Cathryn Birch and Dr John Marsham, you will work closely with project partners at the Met Office to design and produce a set of convective-scale ensemble weather forecasts. You will evaluate forecast skill quantitatively and work with providers and users of weather forecasts to identify the best strategies for communicating forecasts effectively to different user groups. You will work closely with other postdoctoral researchers within the project to utilise the ensemble forecasts to understand factors influencing convective storm predictability. A focus region will be Lake Victoria, where high winds from convective storms cause the deaths of thousands of fishermen every year. Part of the role will involve mentoring to earlier career researchers in Africa.
