Research Technician (Histology)

University College London – Sainsbury Wellcome Centre

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 6.

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) commenced research operations in Spring 2016 bringing together world-leading scientists to investigate how brain circuits process information to generate perception, form memories and guide behaviour. Developed through the vision and partnership of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, and with substantial investment from these partners, the mission of SWC is to generate and test experimentally tractable theories of brain function.

The O’Keefe lab’s current research is directed toward unravelling the role of the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus in spatial memory and understanding the mechanisms underlying short-term memories in the amygdala.  The lab employs a range of technologies including tetrode and high density neuropixels electrophysiological probes, two photon imaging in conjunction with virtual reality environment, and novel maze tasks to study the spatial correlates of hippocampal and medial entorhinal cortical cells.

The lab is now looking for a Histology Technician to provide technical support for research-related activities. You will set up and perform experiments in close collaboration with senior members of the O’Keefe lab, as well as provide support for maintenance of equipment, lab supplies and databases. Along with colleagues within the lab you will prepare and present findings of research activity at scientific meetings, as well as attending and contributing to research seminars.

This post is funded until 31 July 2019 in the first instance.

You will have a keen interest and commitment to research, prior experience of working in a research laboratory, and technical expertise in tissue sectioning with cryostat, microtome or vibratome. Experience of immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and imaging software and an understanding of or experience in the field of neuroscience is highly desirable.
