This project is a component of a large International effort to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients. This CRUK Grand Challenge will give the successful candidate the opportunity to work principally with groups at Exeter University and Duke University in the US.

We are looking for a well-qualified and motivated individual to conduct research that will examine the physicochemical characteristics of breast tissues in order to develop new, unconventional biomarkers with diagnostic and prognostic ability. The collaborative teams at Cranfield and Exeter are currently at the leading edge of this exciting field and are keen to progress the work as rapidly as possible.

The Cranfield team are exploiting the X-ray scattering (diffraction) signals generated from breast tissues to explore and develop new models of tissue as it becomes modified at the onset of cancer.  In particular, we shall be examining the immortalisation of tissue physiology by breast microcalcifications. This is challenging research with the potential for very high rewards in terms of new approaches to cancer diagnoses and prognostics.

Candidates should have good numeracy skills and experience of scientific programming skills would also be an advantage. Good interpersonal and communication (oral and written in English) skills are also required.

Entry requirements: Applicants should hold at least a Bachelor Degree of at least an upper second class or hold a Masters Degree (MSc/MRes) in a relevant discipline such as Physics/Chemistry/Physiology/Materials.
