The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a nonprofit scientific organization founded in 1996 whose mission is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world. IAVI continues to focus on AIDS vaccine development as the most effective long-term approach to ending the HIV epidemic. Ending the epidemic will also require innovation and an integrated approach across prevention and treatment efforts in line with the shifting epidemic. IAVI will contribute to the field by:

  • Establishing an integrated approach to HIV vaccine and prevention research and development, linking an understanding of at risk communities with the most potentially relevant interventions.
  • Bringing new capabilities and innovation to the field through novel collaborations to accelerate product development.
  • Prioritizing approaches that have the greatest potential impact on HIV vaccine and prevention efforts towards diminishing and ultimately ending the epidemic

Job Title: Bioinformatics Project Manager

Position Summary:
The IAVI – HIL is responsible for the development and implementation of the USAID-funded ADVANCE Data Warehouse programme which built on the wealth of clinical, epidemiological and immunological data collected during the course of IAVI-sponsored clinical trials. The IAVI – HIL has also implemented a number of bespoke information management system (LIMS, a document management system, an environmental management system, a data warehouse to manage study data from a particular project that may be expanded to other studies, SharePoint) required to perform its role as core central reference laboratory for cellular immunology within IAVI’s global clinical trial network.

The primary role of the position is to lead the implementation of the Data Warehouse programme. The post holder will be responsible for performing day-to-day management of this programme and will ensure information technologies, governance, and legal agreements are in place to allow for sharing of data with the IAVI network of collaborators and partners and beyond. The secondary role of the position is to ensure all information management systems in use at the IAVI-HIL are documented, and comply with appropriate regulatory framework. The post holder will also be involved in other Bioinformatics projects and initiatives at IAVI such as compliance with Open Data policy.

The post holder will work closely with the Senior Director, IAVI – HIL Global Operations; the Director, Information Technology; The Director, Epidemiology, Medical Affairs; the IAVI Data Working Group; IAVI’s collaborating institutions worldwide; and ICT vendors and service providers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing day-to-day management of assigned projects
  • Organizes, directs, and coordinates the planning and production of all activities associated with assigned projects
  • Supports members of assigned project teams
  • Prepares and presents status on project schedule, project costs, project deliverables, project issues and risks, and issue resolution and risk mitigation strategies
  • Collaborate with teams and other project managers to achieve organizational goals
  • Work closely with the Biobank Coordinator and GCLP lab manager to ensure information systems are working seamlessly and  to specifications.
  • In collaboration with IAVI ICT, project manage the implementation of HIL - global bespoke information management solutions.
  • Organize and plan training in existing and new information management systems
  • Elicit and document requirements and specifications from functional users and subject matter experts
  • Translates business requirements into a best fit within the applications, and supports development of prototypes, processes and documentation including project plans.
  • Develop and maintain standard systems requirement documents including but not limited to: Business Case document, Project Management Plan, business process workflows, Functional Requirements Documents; Design Document, and use cases
  • Support the development of a governance framework and implementation of appropriate policies, SOPs, training and guidelines for the management of the ADVANCE data warehouse information.
  • Coordinate with the Legal Teams to ensure research and collaboration agreements cover governance.
  • Liaise with key partners to drive compliance and understanding of various processes (such as access, governance etc.)
  • Drive the production of legal agreements related to the set up and access to the ADVANCE data Warehouse.
  • Ensure systems in use are documented.
  • Maintain appropriate tools and systems to support various processes and audiences.
  • Liaise with IAVI staff and partners

Experience and Skills:
The successful candidate must have proven, hands-on, successful experience in project planning and management and demonstrated ability to provide guidance and supervision to project management tasks and proven ability to control schedule, resources, and project funds and demonstrates written and oral communication skills. In addition, knowledge of, and preferably experience with, software development methodologies, tools and technologies applied to Health, Clinical or Bioinformatics software.

  • Project management
  • Demonstrable success in managing software implementation projects, facilitating and tracking activities within and across projects and programs; maintaining standards, processes, tools, and templates; and assisting project team members in performing tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Comfortable and familiar with data management, mining, manipulation and presentation
  • Familiarity with governance regulatory framework associated with the use of patient data and information
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work streams on a daily basis
  • Knowledge in global compliance regulations governing clinical development activities
  • Strong leadership as well as oral and written communication skills is required
  • Developed problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent presentation & communication skills in both oral and written form
  • Genuine desire to learn is essential
