Full-Time Fixed Term positions for 3 years each

Research Assistant salary range: £32,380 to £34,040 per annum

Research Associate salary range: £36,800 to £44,220 per annum

The Hamlyn Centre is internationally renowned for robotics and underpinning technologies in mechatronics, AI, control and human-robot interaction. Focusing on technological innovation but with a strong emphasis on translation and direct societal benefits, the centre is at the forefront of research in imaging, sensing and robotics for addressing real world challenges. 

We are seeking to appoint two outstanding researchers at either Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) or Research Associate (post-doctoral) level to join the EPSRC funded Future AI and Robotics for Space (FAIR-SPACE) grant. The project brings together six UK university champions in Robotics and AI (RAI) with a significant number of national and international project partners representing major space companies, agencies, research institutions as well as cross-sectorial RAI organizations.

FAIR-SPACE’s vision is to establish an international centre of excellence in space RAS that ensures the UK is recognised as a global leader in the field. To achieve this, we will integrate world-class academic and industrial capabilities across the UK behind a series of use-inspired research challenges, addressing UK national priorities in orbital manipulators, autonomous planetary vehicles, and robotic support for manned exploration.

We are looking for outstanding applicants in any of the following areas of research:

  • Robot manipulation and grasping, as well as mechatronics for bioinspired metamorphic manipulator/vehicle designs
  • Human-Robot interfacing particularly in intention detection, cooperative control and brain-computer interfaces (BCI)
  • Wearable robotics for novel space suit designs

To apply candidates must have:

  • A high level of analytical and computing skills
  • You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in system integration and practical space deployment would be an advantage.
  • Applicants with strong hands on skills in mechatronics, BCI, modelling and kinematic control are preferred.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in relevant areas.
  • At Research Associate level, you will need to have considerable experience in interdisciplinary research and managing large integrated development projects.

For a Research Assistant level position, you must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.  For a Research Associate position, you must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in related disciplines.
