Fully Funded PhD Studentship: New Polymers for Biomedical Applications

University of Warwick - The GibsonGroup

Supervisors: Prof. Matthew I. Gibson

Deadline: Until Filled (to Start October 2018 or as close as possible)

Project description:

The GibsonGroup has a vacancy for an ambitious PhD student with a background in synthetic chemistry. The PhD is joint with an industrial partner, but will be grounded in the development and characterisation of new synthetic polymers. There will be opportunities to visit the industrial partner. The PhD will involve the synthesis of well-defined polymers using controlled radical polymerization technique and applying high resolution analytical methods including MALDI-tof to analyse their structure. These polymers will be evaluated in a diverse range of application areas. See some of our recent papers for background; Biomacromolecules, 2018, 19, 256; Nature Communications, 2017, 1546; Angew. Chem., 2017, 56, 15941.

Full training will be provided in the relevant skills and you will be actively encouraged to present your results at conferences and symposia.

The GibsonGroup is joint between the Department of Chemistry and Warwick Medical School, providing world-class facilities and environment for cutting-edge biomaterials science. We have dedicated laboratories for synthetic, analytical, cell biology and synthetic biology/microbiology, and the successful candidate will sit within a large multidisciplinary team (see www.warwick.ac.uk/go/gibsongroup)

Good degree (2.i or 1st class) in chemistry, , materials science or related subjects. Must be willing to engage in interdisciplinary research as part of a diverse team of chemists and biologists. Funding only available for UK/EU students.

How to apply:

In the first instance please contact Prof. Matthew I. Gibson by email at m.i.gibson@warwick.ac.uk Include in your email a CV and your current/predicted grades.
