Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in Software Engineering and Education, within the team delivering Manchester’s contribution to the UK Institute of Coding.

The Institute of Coding (IoC) www.instituteofcoding.org is an exciting national initiative which brings together a range of universities, industry, training providers and professional bodies to address the UK’s digital skills gaps. The Institute’s vision is to enhance the education and employability of every IoC learner, and ensure that employers and individuals across the UK can access the skills they need to compete in the global digital economy.

You will work alongside academic staff from the School of Computer Science, and 2 full-time research software engineers from the University’s experienced Research IT team, to develop innovative and effective teaching resources to educate the next generation of software engineers. The focus of the project is on developing new approaches to learning through automated marking, continuous feedback systems and extensive learner analytics.  You will work closely with our industry partners to ensure the relevance of the developed resources, and with Institute partners to deploy the resources in other institutions and to evaluate their usefulness. We anticipate results publishable in the mainstream software engineering literature, as well as in venues dedicated to software engineering education.

You should have, or be working towards, a Ph.D. level qualification or experience in software engineering, computer science or a related discipline. You should be familiar with modern software engineering practice, have excellent problem solving and communication skills and a proven track record of research publication.

The appointment will be in the School of Computer Science in the Information Management Group, working with Dr Suzanne M. Embury and Dr Caroline Jay. The School is among the largest in the UK, and has research and teaching profiles that are both broad and deep, reflecting critical mass both in core areas of the discipline and more specialised areas. It was ranked 4th in overall GPA in REF 2014 and equal 1st for the quality of the research environment).

The School is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The School holds a Bronze Award for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace and we particularly welcome applications from women and people from groups that are currently under-represented in Computer Science.
