The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a national research centre, funded by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology. We have a purpose built research facility as part of the Harwell Campus near Didcot, with a combination of lab and office space.  This role is very much hands on, working as part a small facilities team responsible for ensuring that our facilities are maintained to a high standard for our staff and visitors. 

This is a temporary role for 6-9 months to cover staff absence. It will be working full time, but we are open to reduced hours across 5 days. 

Responsibilities 

You will:

  • Regularly inspect all facilities to ensure they remain operational on a day-to-day basis, dealing with minor items of repair and maintenance and reporting more significant works required to the Facilities Manager.
  • Follow health & safety procedures and risk assessments at all times addressing or reporting any concerns immediately. Producing areas and task specific risk assessments where appropriate.
  • To undertake minor repairs and maintenance that do not require the services of a skilled craftsman, and which are not covered by a maintenance contract.
  • Support periodic inspections (Fire, First Aid, Safety etc.).
  • Shared responsibility for gas cylinder exchange and N2 decanting.
  • Periodic small plant and equipment maintenance and monitoring activities, including contractor overview.
  • Assist with event support setting up furniture and AV equipment.
  • Ensure timely and safe waste management for lab chemicals and packaging.
  • Support scientists and visitors with ad hoc requests such as autoclave operation.
  • Support to collect deliveries and distribute to the relevant teams/labs, including valuable technical equipment.
  • Liaison with Cleaning contractor and Estates Soft Services including periodic review inspections.
  • Adhoc maintenance work.

Other Duties

  • To be aware of and exercise personal and Institute responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and other related matters.
  • To carry out any other duties as required by the Head of Facilities to deliver the wider service to The Franklin within the skills of the post holder.
