The Opportunity:

CEF is looking for a Research Associate to join our group, a lively and widely interdisciplinary team crossing the spectrums of materials research, electronics/electrical engineering, digital/analogue design and artificial intelligence. Successful applicants will work towards developing new thin film processes and devices for magnetic and spintronic applications such as novel memories. The post-holder will work closely with materials and devices researchers within CEF and have access to the facilities of the Scottish Microelectronics Cleanroom (SMC), a state-of-the-art academic cleanroom with strong ties to both academia and industry.

Successful candidates are expected to have proven record in developing and electrically characterising spintronic, magnetic and/or ferroelectric devices. Examples include, but are not limited to, spin-torque transfer devices (STT), magnetic tunnelling junctions (MTJ) or ferroelectric random-access memories (FERAM). Additional expertise in analytical techniques (eg. XPS, XRD) will be beneficial towards a successful application. The post-holder will also need to have demonstrated independent working in a cleanroom environment and hands-on experience with cleanroom processing, especially deposition, lithography and etching tooling.

Prospective researchers should have great communication, organization and technical skills and be able to disseminate results in scientific journals and international conferences. They will report to CEF director, Prof Prodromakis, and will be in ongoing engagement with fellow researchers and technical staff.

This is a fixed term position for up to two (2) years

  • Experience in testing devices for spintronic, magnetic or ferroelectric applications.
  • Record of delivering objectives/milestones in research projects related to developing and characterising thin film structures and devices
  • Good oral and communication skills and a proven ability to disseminate results in scientific publication
