Research Associate in Computational Mechanics

This post is jointly funded from two EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) projects; one related to modelling fibre reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs) and the other (Resilient Materials for Life RM4L Programme Grant) on the development of self-healing cementitious materials. The aim of the project is to devise a new micromechanics-based numerical approach for simulating the behaviour of FRCCs that explicitly predicts the development of micro-cracks and their coalescence into macro-cracks in order to properly describe the serviceability and ultimate behaviour of this material. In the first part of the project the work will focus on the simulation of micro and macro-cracking in FRCCs and on the transition between the two cracking stages. The project will also involve implementation of the material model in a nonlinear finite element code and undertaking of initial validation tests. In the latter part of the project the work will be extended to include self-healing behaviour.

A substantial experimental programme of work is associated with this project. The experimental work will be carried out by a PhD student and involves tracking the development of micro-cracks and formation of macro-cracks inside and on the surface of FRCC specimens using non-destructive monitoring techniques. It is expected that the experimental findings will feed into the numerical work and vice-versa. There are many interesting computational challenges associated with the work and it has the advantage that it is linked to a real and important application.

The post seeks candidates holding a PhD (or shortly due to complete) in numerical modelling, preferably with some experience of constitutive modelling and related computational techniques. A strong mathematical background, established programming skills, and ability to carry out numerical analysis and code development are central to the post.

The post holder is expected to: undertake research work autonomously when required, possess good organisational and planning skills, work well under pressure, work well in a team that includes PhD students, have good interpersonal skills, be prepared to travel for research visits, provide informal weekly progress reports, be able to communicate (verbally and in writing) their research effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences and to be keen on publishing high-quality scientific journal papers.

This post is full time and fixed term for 18 months.
