University of Macau (UM)

Founded in 1981, the University of Macau (UM) is a leading public comprehensive university in Macao, a gateway between China and the world for centuries.

UM is ranked No.37 in Asia (THE Asia University Rankings) and No.193 in the world (THE World University Rankings). English is the main medium of instruction and working language.

We are a diverse community, with 80 per cent of our faculty members coming from outside Macao. We take pride in our strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community services.

We attract students from around 50 countries/regions and provide whole-person education highlighted by a unique ‘4-in-1’ education model, which consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education. This is underpinned by a system of 10 residential colleges, and joint programmes with renowned partners around the world.

We offer over 100 degree programmes at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Our teaching units include Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Honours College, Graduate School, and Centre for Continuing Education. Our research institutes include Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, Institute of Collaborative Innovation, Institute of Microelectronics, Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management, and Centre for Macau Studies.

Today, we strive to further expand industry-academia collaboration and global partnerships, especially those with the English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking worlds. With a new development plan in place, we aspire to become a university of excellence that is not only considered the pride of Macao but also recognised as an outstanding institution by academic communities both at home and abroad.
