University of Macau (UM)

The University of Macau (UM) is a leading public comprehensive university in Macao, a gateway between China and the Western world for centuries.

Founded in 1981, UM is one of the top 40 universities in Asia (THE Asia University Rankings 2021) and among the top 250 universities in the world (THE World University Rankings 2022). English is the main medium of instruction and working language.

We are a diverse community, with 80 per cent of our faculty members coming from outside Macao. We take pride in our strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community services.

We attract students from around 50 countries/regions and provide whole-person education highlighted by a unique ‘4-in-1’ education model, which consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education. This is underpinned by a system of 10 residential colleges, and joint programmes with renowned partners around the world.

We offer around 130 degree programmes at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Our teaching units include the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Honours College, Graduate School, and Centre for Continuing Education. UM's research institutes include the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, Institute of Collaborative Innovation, Institute of Microelectronics, Centre for Macau Studies, Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management, and Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Today, we strive to further expand industry-academia collaboration and global partnerships, especially those with the English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking worlds. With a new development plan in place, we aspire to become a university of excellence that is not only considered the pride of Macao but also recognised as an outstanding institution by academic communities both at home and abroad.
