Fully-Funded PhD Opportunities in Web Science Innovation

University of Southampton – Web Science Institute

Project description

The Web Science Institute's Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Southampton focuses on the interaction between technology and society, investigating how the Web is changing the world and finding ways to innovate and change the Web. Web Science explores the impact of the Web on all aspects of human society, from the individual right through to national and global scales, investigating the technical capabilities of its current distributed information infrastructure, scrutinising the public policy and social practices that have made it a transformative global phenomenon, and then imagining new ways of organising and using the Web to create new economic, social, and cultural value.

We welcome applications for our 4-year integrated PhD (iPhD) programme of socio-technical research and innovation for 2018 entry.

Innovative and Challenging Postgraduate Research Programme

The EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Web Science Innovation offers fully funded four-year scholarships, consisting of an initial training year followed by a three-year research project supervised by a multi-disciplinary team. The CDT emphasises cohort working to support interdisciplinary research and provides groups frequent opportunities to work together with partners from industry, commerce, government, and the third sector. The CDT is part of an international network of Web Science research centres, offering summer schools, workshops, and opportunities for international collaboration (see http://www.webscience.org).

This iPhD programme equips students to become leaders in the emerging Digital Economy - whether in industry and business, government and the public sector, or the third sector. We welcome applications from students with any relevant background, providing they have an excellent first degree and can demonstrate an enthusiasm for interdisciplinary Web Science research.

The CDT has a focus on innovation and the development of research ideas beyond academia. We are particularly keen to recruit students with the ambition to imagine and shape the future Web. What next for the digital economy? Where will the next big Web innovation come from? What challenges must be overcome to ensure social inclusion and prosperity for all?
