Research Computing Solutions Specialist (Fixed Term)

Research and Institutional Services (RIS), a division of University Information Services in the University of Cambridge, is seeking to appoint a Research Computing Specialist who will support development and service operations of the new Research Data Storage and Cloud Computing services. Role holders will be also involved in a range of other high profile, research computing-oriented, internally and externally facing projects run by the division.

Essential skills include: practical and proven knowledge of Linux system administration, shell scripting and practical knowledge of high level programming languages such as Perl or Python, configuration management and automation methods using technologies such as Puppet or Ansible. Experience with storage platforms, parallel file systems and cloud computing platforms will be advantageous. The role holders will need to be proactive, creative and comfortable resolving complex problems.

RIS provides services, including HPC, data storage and analytics and virtual machines, to the entire University and its affiliated institutions. It also supports research computing on a larger UK scale through DiRAC, and a new, peta-scale Tier 2 national HPC facility. RIS continues to enjoy rapid growth in demand for its services across all academic disciplines and already supports several large scientific projects in astrophysics and particle physics, e.g. the Square Kilometre Array, and in the life sciences e.g. the 10,000 genome project.
