Fully Funded M2A MSc by Research Scholarship: Production of Synthetic Gypsum from Steelmaking Slags

Synthetic gypsum may be derived as a by-product of industrial processes. The most important is the flue gas desulphurisation, a process that removes synthetic gypsum from the flue gases at coal-fired power stations. However, closure of all Britain’s coal power plants by 2025 might create a shortage of the supply of gypsum in the UK and elsewhere.

Tata Steel researched various ways of utilising by-products of their steelmaking operations and showed that steelmaking slags can be reused in the process of producing synthetic gypsum [1]. As the steelmaking slags cannot easily be applied as soil fertilisers or used for roadmaking purposes and therefore have to be landfilled, this creates a market opportunity worth exploring.

Project Aims:

  1. To assess the efficiency of the process of synthesis of yellow gypsum from various steelmaking slags from Port Talbot Steelworks.
  2. To carry-out detailed market analysis and make recommendations regarding feasibility of commercialisation of the process of synthesis of yellow gypsum from steelmaking slags from Port Talbot Steelworks in the UK.


Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project is suitable for candidates with a background in Chemistry or Business Science.
