iPLACENTA (www.iplacenta.eu) is a Horizon 2020 European training network that has received funding from the EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie action (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017 ). iPLACENTA will provide a 36-month multi-disciplinary PhD training programme for 15 Early Stage Researchers to study, model and visualise the placenta to enhance investigation and prognosis of complicated pregnancies.. The overarching objectives in the iPLACENTA network are to unlock the complexity of placental disease by providing mechanistic clues for complex diseases, developing new ways to model placenta function and validating novel clinical diagnostic tools.

Aston Medical School is looking for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) to work on the project “Enhancing imaging of the placenta in murine models of preeclampsia and standardisation of preeclampsia mouse models (ESR11)” as part of iPLACENTA network collaborating with 14 other ESRs based in 11 European academic, industrial and clinical institutes.

The focus of this project is to develop novel models of preeclampsia using genetic modified mouse and to assess the “preeclampsia phenotype” and placental, fetus and maternal cardiovascular function using Ultrasound imaging using VisualSonics latest high frequency ultrasound technology. In addition, molecular characteristics will be conducted to fully characterise the model and assess the placental insufficiency in vivo. 

You will have a good Bachelor (Hons.) degree (either first class or upper second class) or hold an MSc in biomedical/biological science or relevant discipline and experience in Biomedical research and documenting research projects.

Eligibility:

There is a mobility rule which applies to this position. The respective candidate must not have worked for more than 12 months in the UK within the last three years. Furthermore, the candidate needs to be in his/her first four years of his/her research career. The four years are counted from the date a degree was obtained which formally entitles to embark on a doctorate in the country either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided.
