Communications and External Relations

Communications and External Relations brings together the main areas involved in leading the University’s strategic positioning and profile. Engaging with students, staff and stakeholders we promote the University’s excellence in research and education, and ensure its profile is communicated in a consistent way. We take an innovative and creative approach to our work and are at the forefront of new and best practice in communications, marketing, and stakeholder and customer service.

We are looking for a proactive individual to join our brilliant Philanthropy Team. You will build on, and develop, our existing international fundraising activity – working with a varied range of prospective funders.

You will be joining a creative, innovative Philanthropy team at an exciting time. We will soon be launching our second Chancellor’s Appeal – just one part of our work to support Essex’s ground breaking research across areas including Human Rights, analytics and data science.

We have a growing portfolio of supporters: individuals (including alumni, staff and other stakeholders), charitable trusts and foundations and corporates – and your role will be a vital part in continuing the growth of philanthropy at Essex.

Duties of the Role

The Philanthropy team funds activities to support the University’s strategic objectives of excellence in education and excellence in research. You will work closely with University senior management, and colleagues in our Research and Enterprise Office, Communications, Events and Stakeholder Engagement and academic departments to deliver a coordinated and effective approach. The main focus will be to build on the success of our existing fundraising efforts, and secure significant funds from trusts and foundations.

Responsibilities will include developing and managing a portfolio of charitable trusts and foundations, steward existing donors and supporters, manage and nurture trust and foundations supporters and write and co-ordinate proposals and applications.

Skills and Qualifications required

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent qualification or experience and will have significant experience in fundraising and securing high five and six figure gifts.

You will have substantial experience of writing bids to trusts and foundations, along with a demonstrable understanding of donor stewardship. Strong organisational, project management, presentation and communication skills are essential for this post.

At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
