A new opportunity is available for two outstanding doctoral candidates to develop their careers as researchers within the Centre for Sport, Physical Education & Activity Research (spear) at Canterbury Christ Church University. spear is located within the Faculty of Social & Applied Sciences. Research in the Centre is funded by a range of national and international funders such as the International Olympic Committee, Department of Health, Department for Education, English Federation for Disability Sport, Premiership Rugby, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust. Recent work has focused on the physical activity, health and wellbeing of hard to reach and less active populations. 

The Role

Applications are invited for the position of University Instructor (Research). The successful candidate’s principal responsibilities will be to assist the spear team in delivering externally funded projects and support the Centre’s research-enhanced offer to students through delivery of lectures across the Faculty. The postholder will also study part-time for a PhD in a specified area aligned to spear’s research activity (for which a £6,500 tax-free bursary is provided on top of the salary for the part time Research Assistant post). PhD fees will also be waived.


Applicants should have a current or imminent 2:1 or above undergraduate degree and/or Masters in a relevant subject. Experience of research in physical activity, health and wellbeing, and knowledge of the public health/physical activity policy landscape is essential.
