Applications are invited for a three year Postgraduate studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to be undertaken within the Power Electronics, Machine, and Power System (PEMPS) Research Group at Aston University. The successful applicant will join an established research group working on the research on Smart Grid and advanced power systems analysis (particularly distribution networks).
The position is available to start in October 2018, January 2019, April 2019 or July 2019 (subject to negotiation)
Financial Support This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of £14,777 in 2018/19.
Overseas Applicants Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees, currently this is £12,290 in 2018/19.

Background to the Project
The present Smart Grid and blockchain concepts on the power grid infrastructure lack analytical uncoupling of transactions from the usage of the physical medium for electricity transport. It is envisaged that the eventual peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity market can only be realised when individual transactions can be physically traced to enhance the transparency and reflect the actual usage of the network for correct billing.
This PhD Studentship is to create a new platform to identify millions of streams of power flows in the large-scope distribution network to enable the ambitious Smart Grid and blockchain technology for the power industry, which is seen as a future trend with a growing number of distributed energy resources. It is investigating a P2P platform architecture; fraudulent-free power availability analytics; optimal utilisation of network and assets - model and simulate low-voltage distribution networks in high detail for large-scale and real-time applications; advanced distributed power flow tracing and developing a basal layer of an application with programming interfaces as a software tool.
The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering. Preferred skill requirements include knowledge/experience of: power system analysis, Smart Grid technologies, distribution network design and optimisation, distributed energy resources including renewable power generation and electric vehicles.
