Supervisors: Professors Carey Jewitt and Sara Price
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship linked to the IN-TOUCH: Digital Touch Communication Project, an exciting five-year ERC Award led by Professor Carey Jewitt. - https://in-touch-digital.com/.
The PhD will work with the IN-TOUCH team to explore the consequences and impact of digitally mediated touch on how we communicate in the context of virtual reality environments, wearables, or robotics. We are keen to explore touch via these technologies in the context of either work and/or health and well-being, though are open to applicants’ own ideas within the scope of digital touch communication.
IN-TOUCH is a highly exploratory project within an emergent field. We are looking for curious, and creative applicants with a background in the social sciences, or HCI, Design or Computer Science, who have worked on or are interested in the social aspects of communication, meaning making and touch (existing specialist expertise in social science work within digital touch communication is not required). The successful candidate will need a commitment to interdisciplinary and innovative ways of researching digital communication and want to work as part of a team. The form of the doctorate is to be written (rather than practice-based, although a making or prototyping component is possible).
Studentship supervisors: Professor Carey Jewitt and Professor Sara Price, UCL Knowledge Lab, University College London.
Funding details: The studentship is a (tax free) stipend for 3 years that requires the student to pay for their EU/UK fees out of the stipend rate.
