About La Trobe
La Trobe University’s success is driven by people who are committed to making a difference. They are creative and highly motivated, pursue new ideas and create knowledge. La Trobe is one of Australia’s research leaders, and the largest provider of higher education to regional Victoria. La Trobe University turned 50 in 2017, and over the half century of its existence it has established a reputation as an innovative and accessible university, willing to take risks and take on big challenges. Our teaching and research address some of the most significant issues of our time and we’re passionate about driving change through operational excellence to benefit the communities we serve.
The School of Humanities and Social Science is based in the College of Arts, Social Science and Commerce. The School is a vibrant academic community of 168 academics comprising the Departments of Archaeology and History, Language and Linguistics, Politics and Philosophy, Creative Arts and English, Social Enquiry, and Communication and Media. Teaching and research occurs across all five campuses of the University.
The Department of Archaeology and History combines two of our strongest areas of research and teaching. The disciplines achieved ratings of 5 and 4 respectively in the 2015 ERA rankings, and our History program ranked 3rd in Victoria and top 10 in Australia in the 2018 QS World University Rankings.
Our research specialisations cover Indigenous pasts; Australian history from the deep time to the present; people and the environment; European, American and transnational history; and ancient human origins and modern migrations.
About the role
We are seeking to appoint an eminent historian to the position of Professor (Level E) in the La Trobe University History Program. We have a preference for scholars with expertise in the field of Australian history (broadly conceived) but are open to applications from excellent candidates in any field. The School is undergoing a program of strategic renewal and this position is an integral part of that process. The successful candidate will provide outstanding leadership to the History Program as well as the School as it charts a new course.
This position is part of strategic investment in an area of strength, with the University contemporaneously seeking to appoint an Associate Professor of History (specialising in Indigenous histories in Australia and the Asia Pacific)
The successful incumbent will be an internationally acknowledged historian. They will design and lead curriculum development, teaching, and conduct and publish, or otherwise disseminate, the highest quality research and scholarship and will secure external funding for their research. They will also foster excellence in teaching and research in History at La Trobe, and through relevant national and international external bodies.
All Professors are members of the University’s Academic Board and are expected to contribute to the leadership not only of their School and College, but also of the University as a whole.
