About the role
A one year postdoctoral position is available for a talented protein NMR spectroscopist with a strong interest in protein structural studies and their application to drug discovery. The postdoctoral scientist will work in Prof. Mark Carr’s group on a successful collaborative research programme fully funded by the pharmaceutical company UCB Biopharma. The project will involve the determination of solution structures for proteins targeted by UCB Biopharma drug discovery programmes and detailed characterisation of their interactions with candidate drugs, which may be small molecules or therapeutic antibodies. The proposed work will involve close interactions with experienced research scientists at UCB Biopharma and will be supported by their extensive protein expression, purification and biophysical facilities. The Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology is superbly equipped for all aspects of NMR-based structural biology, including 500, 600 (x2) and 800 MHz NMR spectrometers with cryoprobes, and excellent computer facilities.
LISCB comprises over 20 research groups drawn from several departments, including the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, and brings together internationally renowned research using structural biology, chemical biology and single molecule methods to investigate major challenges in fundamental biological processes into a single world-leading unit.
You will have proven experience in many aspects of NMR-based structural biology of proteins and protein-ligand complexes, and have a strong interest in knowledge-based drug discovery. Previous experience in protein expression and purification is desirable but not essential. The ability and willingness to travel to meetings with collaborators and to use off-campus research facilities is essential. Good communication and presentation skills are also a pre-requisite.
