Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for

2 Open Topic Tenure Track Professorships for Sensory Sciences

(W1 / Assistant Professor)

The professorships are to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of three years. Upon successful evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a W2 or W3 professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.

We seek to appoint top early career scholars who will develop outstanding expertise in the field. The professorships are financed with funds from a Federal and State programme for supporting young researchers at German universities. All professorships are intended to make significant contributions to the FAU key research priorities. This call for applications addresses outstanding early career scholars with the ambition of developing their own profiles and careers as part of the strategic development of a key priority in cooperation with renowned scholars at FAU (‘Open Topic Tenure Track’). The positions announced in this call for applications will strengthen research and teaching in the field of 'Sensory Sciences'. The successful candidates will be invited to play an active role in the ‘Campus of the Senses’, a future initiative in collaboration with Fraunhofer Institutes IIS and IVV.

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology invites applications for a professorship in the Department of Psychology. We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile in the field of sensory sciences (sensation and perception, and physiology of perception). A particular focus may lie on processes of multisensory perception and communication, taking chemo-sensory processes into account. We welcome applications from individuals with an excellent track record in research and publications on multi-sensory perception and communication. A university degree in psychology or another relevant subject from the field of life sciences is a prerequisite.

The Department of Psychology encourages transparent and replicable research and pursues these objectives with open data, open material and pre-registration. Please state clearly in your application how you have followed these objectives in the past and how you intend to do so in the future.

The Faculty of Engineering seeks to appoint a W1 professorship in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering (EEI). The successful candidate is expected to represent the field of electronic circuit technology for sensor systems in research and teaching, especially the interfaces between physical sensors and electrical signals. We welcome applications from individuals with excellent research and publication achievements in designing analogue and digital circuits, as well as mixed-signal integrated circuits.

Suitable applicants may also be considered for a management position in the Smart Sensing and Electronics division at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS). Prerequisites for the position include a university degree in electrical engineering or a relevant degree in engineering or natural sciences.

Successful candidates demonstrate initial academic achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. You have substantial research experience abroad and/or experience in managing research projects and in raising third party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience, including the ability to teach in English, are also prerequisites.

FAU expects applicants to become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.

FAU offers career development, mentoring and an attractive initial research budget. Based on international standards and transparent performance agreements, FAU ensures a fair tenure track evaluation process.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and is also responsive to the needs of dual career couples.

Please submit your complete application documents (CV, list of publications, list of lectures and courses taught, copies of certificates and degrees, list of third-party funding) online at by 22.10.2018, addressed to the Dean of the respective Faculty. Please contact with any questions.
