The Department of English Studies at Durham University seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (grade 7 or 8) in American Literature. Applications are invited from candidates with proven ability or potential to teach a wide range of American Literature and are particularly welcome from candidates whose research is informed by questions of race, ethnicity, gender and/or sexuality, and/or positions American Literature within transnational and/or hemispheric frames.
The successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of outstanding research potential and/or achievement and will have the proven ability or potential to contribute positively to teaching (lectures, seminars, tutorials, and dissertation supervision) at all levels, including developing new modules in areas of specialist interest to complement existing options at undergraduate and MA level. S/he will contribute to a department with existing strengths in this area, including popular lecture modules in American Poetry (level 2) and American Fiction (level 3), as well as a range of more specialized undergraduate and MA modules; s/he will also be expected to attract and supervise postgraduate research students at PhD level and to contribute to strengthening and enhancing the University’s international profile through teaching and research of global reach and significance.
