Main Duties & Responsibilities

Supervise students in a practical environment with specialist techniques and procedures, ensuring safe and effective working at all times.

Responsible for managing the work area, ensuring that relevant health and safety risk assessments, and where appropriate portable appliance testing is completed either personally or by providing guidance and advice to team members with delegated responsibility.

Ensuring the equipment used in the laboratories is maintained in a safe and operational by carrying out testing and repair as necessary.              

Ensure the Division stores are kept stocked to appropriate levels for teaching and projects.

Manage the chemical store (keep inventory store records, initiate periodic disposal of chemistry) and be responsible for accompanying paperwork in accordance with UH procedures

Making recommendations for purchase or lease through evaluation and testing of new equipment and resources.                      

Skills and Experience Needed

Prepare samples for microscopy and nano/micro tests including preparation of metallurgical specimens for defined experiments and undergraduate projects.

Prepare the heat treatment ovens and furnaces for experiments and projects operation

Fulfil composite lay-up preparation and operate autoclave

Design equipment/parts used during various mechanical tests and support their production in workshop.

Ensure that checks are undertaken to confirm the serviceability of equipment, undertaking or arranging repairs if possible, and reporting unrepairable faults to the Technical Manager and the Division Leader.

Qualifications Required

A recognized qualification in an appropriate subject degree or HNC/HND level or equivalent.

Good standard of general education to A Level standard, including good level of numeracy.
