Training and mentoring future academic leaders:  2019 intake

The University of Edinburgh is now seeking to appoint a further cohort of highly ambitious individuals who aspire to become the next generation of clinical academic leaders. Vacancies are available within the ECAT (Edinburgh Clinical Academic Track) programme for trainees seeking doctoral (PhD) training and mentorship, with funding from the Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK (CRUK).  All vacancies are open to medically-qualified trainees in any clinical discipline from anywhere in the UK. All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to a research career and should have a track record appropriate to their career stage in basic, translational or clinical research.

A) ECAT/Wellcome Trust PhD Training Fellowship for Clinicians – 5 posts

With funding from the Wellcome Trust, the ECAT programme has up to five posts available for the 2019 intake. Since its inception in 2008, ECAT has recruited more than 60 medical trainees from across the UK, representing over 20 clinical disciplines, who have pursued diverse fields of PhD training and been highly successful in postdoctoral career progression.  All posts provide funding for a full-time, three-year Wellcome Trust PhD Training Fellowship for Clinicians leading to a PhD in one of the University of Edinburgh’s internationally competitive, multidisciplinary research centres.  In order to maximise flexibility for individual trainees, two types of post are available:  ECAT Clinical Lectureships (with combined clinical and research training and mentorship to CCT) and ECAT PhD Fellowships (with research training and mentorship).  In both cases, funding is provided for a preparatory period (one year for the former, three months for the latter) before beginning the three-year PhD project, when selection of supervisors and planning of the PhD project are optimised with the support of the ECAT Directors. Progression through the scheme is subject to satisfactory performance but does not involve competitive interviews after initial appointment.

B) ECAT-linked CRUK Clinical Research Fellowship – 1 post

Additionally, one CRUK Clinical Research Fellowship is available.  The fellowship includes a three-year, full-time PhD and is open to candidates from any clinical discipline who aspire to PhD training that is relevant to cancer.  The fellowship also offers a three-month preparatory period, when selection of supervisors and planning of the PhD project are optimised with the support of the ECAT Directors.

Candidates for ECAT Clinical Lecturer posts must hold or obtain a specialty training position with a National Training Number (NTN) in their chosen discipline in the UK no later than August 2019.  Candidates for ECAT PhD Fellowship or CRUK Clinical Research Fellowship posts need not hold a specialty training position (NTN).  Candidates need not specify which post they are applying for, but can indicate a preference at the time of interview.  Candidates for all posts must be GMC registered.  We aim to be an inclusive programme and welcome applications from eligible candidates irrespective of gender or ethnic group.
