EMBL is looking for a senior project officer for a maternity leave replacement to be involved in a broad spectrum of projects and other activities within administration that are partly running or will have to be taken up. He/she will be expected, in cooperation with colleagues elsewhere in EMBL, to carry out a continuous process of identifying areas in which the services of administration can be improved and make proposals for their implementation. The post holder will report directly to the Administrative Director.

Your role

Projects change over time but those currently projected or of an ongoing nature are:

  • Business Process Analysis of administrative work processes, with suggestions for improvement or streamlining, to be documented using business design tools. These analyses may serve as blueprints for IT development, form the basis for desk instructions, etc.
  • Active management of and substantial contribution to ongoing projects of the Administration, working closely in particular with Human Resources and Finance
  • Supporting the Administrative Director with projects specific to the Administrative Director’s Office, as the implementation of an external review of the administration and the coordination of high level contacts to Council Member or Host State administrations.
  • Participation in proposition, development and implementation of concepts, instruments and systems of human resources management. 

Participating in the development, implementation and evaluation of directorial goals, objectives and systems; recommending new approaches, policies and procedures to achieve continuous improvement in the efficiency of the directorate and the services provided.

You have

Applicants should have a bachelor degree and ideally three years´ practical work experience in managing a variety of projects. 

The ideal candidate should:

  • have solid project management skills as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • handle a variety of tasks with numerous interruptions and under strict timelines;
  • pay attention to details;
  • have the ability to present information or draft material in a clear and logical manner;
  • be able to take initiative, possess analytical skills, and be capable of proposing imaginative and practical solutio
  • be comfortable and confident to work in a standalone capacity as well as foster team working;
  • be confident to challenge established ways of working and evolve new practices appropriate to the organisations future challenge; and
  • be able to “think outside the box” when researching and recommending solutions.

Fluency in spoken and written English is essential for this position.

You might also have

Experience in a scientific environment and/or a comparable international organisation would be an advantage. Working knowledge in German and/or French would be advantageous as would a formal project management qualification.
