Full-time Lecturer post in Chemistry

NUIST Reading Academy, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST)

The NUIST-Reading Academy is seeking to appoint a full-time chemistry lecturer in physical chemistry, for teaching of general chemistry and analytical chemistry with specialisation in physical chemistry. The appointee would be expected to deliver lectures and laboratory classes across all years of the degree, as well as supervising final year research projects.

The NUIST-Reading Academy is in Jiangsu Province, China, and is a joint venture between the University of Reading, UK, and NUIST, China. It aims to provide high quality education to students in China with the expectation of completing their studies in the UK. It offers six undergraduate programmes: Applied Chemistry, International Economics and Trade, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering, Atmospheric Science (Meteorology) and Law.

The Academy provides a variety of central support facilities to assist research and training initiatives, which are supplemented by training opportunities provided by UoR’s Centre for Quality, Support and Development (CQSD). The Academy offers a supportive environment in which you’ll work alongside academics dedicated to delivering high quality teaching and research from both universities.

The post is based in Nanjing city, with easy access to public transportation, international airports, shopping, hospitals etc.

Job particulars:

  • Full-time chemistry lecturer post at NUIST-Reading Academy.
  • Annual salary (RMB, before tax): 250,000+, depending on relevant individual skills and experience.
  • International travel allowance: 10,000 RMB per year.
  • Accommodation provided.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Starting date: March/August 2019. 

Responsibilities:

The NUIST-Reading Academy delivers all courses in English. The dual-degree curriculum is designed and developed by UoR. Instruction and assessment takes place at the Academy. The appointee will support programme students and work as part of a close-knit team.

The appointee will have the following main responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and enhance teaching on the BSc Applied Chemistry programme with specific responsibility to cover core-teaching requirements and contribute to other teaching as agreed with the NUIST-Reading Academy administration;
  • Supervising undergraduate projects in the final year;
  • Assessment, grading and moderation of student work and provision of feedback;
  • Hold weekly office hours;
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Maintain friendly and effective working relationships;
  • Liaise with colleagues at the University of Reading;
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities, meetings and workshops;
  • Motivating students to engage in learning, and help them to improve the quality of their work.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Advanced level of proficiency and communicative competence in English;
  • PhD in Chemistry;
  • Experience of teaching physical chemistry and/or related disciplines at undergraduate level;
  • Experience of supervising laboratory classes and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements;
  • Excellent mathematical skills;
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry at undergraduate level;
  • Experience of the administration of courses and modules in British/Western universities;
  • Excellent organisation, communication and inter-personal skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • An excellent team player;
  • A willingness to work flexibly as required.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching chemistry in a Chinese university environment;
  • Documented excellence in classroom teaching and lab instruction;
  • Documented excellence as academic/career advisor to undergraduate students;
  • Experience of addressing student needs from diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Experience with assessment of student learning, quality assurance processes, programme evaluation and coordination;
  • Evidence of professional publications and/or presentations in chemistry research.
