In the context of new forms of propaganda, precarious futures, and massive tensions across intersecting local and global contexts, our inextricability from designed environments presents serious challenges for Communication Design. These include developing critical and meaningful ways to articulate and forge cultural change; working with, through, and against the most innovative technologies; operating within the complexities of a world increasingly riven with difference and conflict.

The School of Communication Design is committed to supporting and developing research of the highest quality through design practice and theory across disciplines, where the role of design is valued as a central tool for social change. Our research and practice reflects this dynamism – we are interested in both traditional and emerging approaches to practice; we encourage curiosity, invention, risk and play in the pursuit of creative solutions.

We are currently accepting applications for a studentship in the MPhil/PhD in Communication Design at University for the Creative Arts, starting in 2019–20.

All elements of the MPhil/PhD are considered sites of intervention, experimentation, and investigation, and we encourage you to develop your research across practical and theoretical domains.  Particular areas of research explored and supported by the school include:
