The RA will work on the EPSRC-funded project `Geometry of Artin Groups Actions'. The goal of this project is to understand the algebraic and geometric structure of general Artin groups and related groups, particularly from the point of view of actions on non-positively curved spaces of various natures: hyperbolic spaces, CAT(0) spaces, etc. Many basic questions about these groups are still open, and a central goal will be to develop an appropriate geometric framework to get a finer understanding of these groups: structure of their subgroups, automorphisms, etc. This project will also involve developing new geometric tools to study the associated actions.
The RA will carry out research in geometric group theory and related fields (write and submit academic articles). They will work on aspects of the proposed project and develop their own related questions. They will present their results at conferences, workshops, and seminars.
The successful applicant is expected to start at the latest on 1 September 2019.
The position is available for 24 months.
Applicants should hold (or be about to) a PhD in mathematics and have an excellent track record of work in the broad field of geometric and combinatorial group theory. Experience with some of the key themes from this project is essential: general Artin groups, group actions on non-positively curved spaces. Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are highly desirable.
