The Faculty of Applied Science and Arts invites highly able and motivated applicants in the Design Workshops, vacancies to be filled by Spring semester (February 2019) or Winter Semester (September 2019).

The Faculty of Applied Science and Arts enrolls 1,250 students across three design majors: Graphic, Product and Media Design. The Design Workshops currently consist of 6 Workshops covering a variety of disciplines with particular relevance to the study programs at GUC. 

Responsibilities:

The position will focus on supervising students during the practical realization of their projects and assist and advise them in making their prototypes. The applicant should develop, service and maintain the workshop. In addition to teaching introductory license courses, the supervisor will be expected to conduct research, in particular with respect to: local craft industries and traditions, sustainability, materials available on the Egyptian market and the technologies in the GUC Industrial Park. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Requirements, experience and skills: 

  • Academic Title will be assigned to successful applicants based on the highest degree achieved, industrial experience, teaching and research experience.
  • In depth knowledge of a wide range of traditional manual techniques and ability to relate these to digital automated technologies.
  • Ensure that Health & Safety policies, procedures and regulations are known understood by students and complied with.
  • Knowledgeable of current and future approaches within the field of design.
  • Curiosity to widen the perception of the craft discipline and thereby create a foundation for innovation in Design. 
  • Strong commitment to progressive design education principles regarding a self-organized and responsible design study.
  • Understanding of the implications of Design practice within social, cultural, economic, scientific or technological contexts. 
  • Competence of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training and aesthetic sensibilities.
  • Strong competences to structure and define project goals in order to foster and motivate positive experiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and writing in English, which is the teaching language.
  • Knowledge of German or Arabic is not imperative but helpful in the context of GUC.
  • Good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.
  • An interest in interdisciplinary collaboration within the GUC and with external partners on the development of joint projects.
