Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent, Fixed-Term/Contract

The NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) is a thriving international centre for learning, teaching and research on ethical and associated social, legal and policy aspects of health care and biomedical sciences. Based in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, CBmE takes responsibility for the Health ethics, Law and Professionalism (HeLP) track of the undergraduate medical curriculum. We also offer graduate courses and doctoral supervision in bioethics. Our research tackles issues of broad international significance with a particular interest in learning for and from Singapore and Asia. We support ethics capability development in the region and currently chair the network of Collaborating Centres for Bioethics of the World Health Organisation. For more information see: http://cbme.nus.edu.sg/

We are looking to appoint a bright, collegial and enthusiastic bioethicist to our faculty. We are particularly keen to develop our strengths in teaching and research in the domains of clinical and healthcare ethics (including work on health systems and public health). Our preference is for someone with sufficient experience and standing to be appointable at Associate Professor level to strengthen and support the development of our research portfolio and to play a leadership role as we enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. An Assistant Professor level appointment may be considered for an exceptional early career scholar with strong potential in the above-mentioned areas. We will consider medically qualified applicants who are eligible and keen to maintain some clinical responsibilities, but they must be able and willing to take on (proportionately) the full range of teaching and research responsibilities of the position.

This academic faculty appointment will be made on a tenured or tenure track basis depending on experience and track record.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Contribute to undergraduate teaching on the Health ethics, Law and Professionalism (HeLP) programme
  • Take lead responsibility for aspects of the HeLP programme and serve on relevant education committees within the School of Medicine
  • Contribute to postgraduate bioethics teaching, including via course development and module co-ordination
  • Undertake and publish bioethics research of international interest and standing
  • Provide academic support to other CBmE activities, for example by facilitating workshop discussions and contributing to responses to Ministry of Health consultations
  • Serve on relevant university and policy committees (commensurate with rank) and participate collegially in academic life

Essential requirements:

  • Thorough grounding in ethics, including the development of normative arguments, to the level expected for a formal postgraduate qualification in ethics from a reputable university.
  • A PhD degree or postgraduate medical qualification recognised by the Singapore Medical Council.
  • Demonstrated experience of university-level teaching in ethics or a closely related field, and evidence of commitment to excellence in education.
  • Strong track record of research and publication in bioethics, including at least some clinical or healthcare ethics.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong organization and management skills.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for collaborative as well as independent working.
  • Experience of broader aspects of academic work e.g. doctoral supervision, doctoral examination, peer reviewing.
