The School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) HSS has two missions. First, HSS provides university core curriculum for all students, including general education, English language competency, Chinese cultural heritage and language competency, physical education, basic competency in information technology (IT) applications.
Beyond the university core curriculum, HSS intends to develop to become a school of excellence in humanities and social sciences, and to provide high-quality programmes in multiple areas at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including, but not limited to, translation & interpreting studies, simultaneous interpreting, applied psychology, international affairs & international relations (global studies), internet and new media, advanced English communication, urban studies, educational studies, sociological studies.
Positions and Qualifications
The School of Humanities and Social Science at CUHK(SZ) invites application for faculty position in the areas of new media studies (specialization areas including, but not limited to, social media analytics, data journalism, cybersecurity and internet governance, digital and mobile media design, media psychology, health communication, marketing communication, etc.), at the rank of full professor/associate professor level with prospect for tenure, although junior candidate with very competitive academic records may be considered for position of assistant professor. Candidate with exceptionally outstanding records may be considered for Chair Professorship with tenure. Candidate should have (i) a PhD degree (by the time of reporting duty) in a relevant area of new media studies; and (ii) evidence of high potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship.
Candidate for associate and full professor position is expected to have solid evidence of excellence in teaching/research/service, and a strong track record of sustained high-quality research/scholarship outcomes in the expertise area(s), as evidenced by research publications in competitive international outlets in the relevant areas of new media studies. In addition, candidate need to demonstrate academic leadership and strong commitment to the highest standard of excellence. Applicant is advised to provide quality indicators for the journals where he/she have research publications (e.g., journal impact factor, journal ranking in a relevant category, as available in the Journal Citations Reports of the Web of Science).
Successful applicant is expected to be able to teach a range of courses in core areas of new media studies. Experience in supervising postgraduate students will be favorably considered.
Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially, leading to longer-term appointment or tenure later, subject to successful performance evaluation and mutual agreement. In cases where a candidate has an established record of excellence and demonstrable potential for continued success, tenure may be offered to the candidate at the time of initial appointment.
The appointees are expected to commence work in the academic year 2018-19.
Salary and Fringe Benefits
Salary will be competitive, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments. Appointments will be made under the establishment of CUHK, Shenzhen and statutory benefits will be provided according to the prevailing labor laws applicable to the PRC. The appointee will be based in Shenzhen, China.
