Russia Research Analyst

Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Use your expertise to support British prosperity and security.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) provides a fascinating and challenging career path for proactive individuals. With 14,000 people working towards the common goals of supporting British citizens and businesses, reducing conflict and building the nation’s prosperity, our diplomatic duties take us to every corner of the world.

The FCO’s agenda regarding current and future relations with Russia continues to be a key point of interest. Joining the Eastern Research Group, you will play an instrumental part in our work as you conduct research and analysis to assist policy-making colleagues. Helping the team understand how Russia operates and the state of its relationships with the rest of the world, you will draw on a variety of academic and outside sources. With your research and analysis ultimately helping to shape how we overcome obstacles to working together with Russia, this is a nationally-important opportunity to contribute to advancing the UK’s security and prosperity. As such, we will expect you to undertake specified projects and those of your own initiative in which you might analyse Russian domestic affairs, foreign policy or other vital areas. Chairing in-house round-tables and representing the FCO at cross-departmental analytical discussions, you will maintain your expertise and seek to expand it further, including through building a wide network of valuable UK-based experts.

This is a unique chance to embed your knowledge of Russia in a deeply experienced and knowledgeable team. You will therefore thrive with us if you can offer demonstrable expertise on Russia-related issues, as well as an academic qualification in Russian Studies or another relevant discipline. You will need a degree-level command of the Russian language, as well as excellent analytical and drafting skills. As a proactive team-player with a thirst for knowledge, you will be comfortable challenging opinions and putting forward alternative viewpoints to policy makers.

We will provide plenty of training and development opportunities, against the backdrop of a friendly and forward-thinking workplace. So if you have a specialist knowledge of Russia that you would like to apply to future diplomatic relations, then the FCO is the ideal place in which to develop your expertise.
