WMG, University of Warwick and Sponsoring Company are seeking a top class candidate to undertake research leading to the award of an International Engineering Doctorate awarded jointly by the Universities of Warwick, Exeter and Cranfield.

As a ‘research engineer’ on our International Doctorate programme you will have unrivalled access to some of the best teaching and industrial expertise in the world, across three universities.  While you will be based at WMG and Sponsor Company, you will also spend time at Cranfield and Exeter Universities to give you the broadest possible experience. You will emerge from the four-year programme more confident and better equipped to make a difference to your company and the global marketplace. 

This opportunity also provides a substantial tax free stipend equivalent to many graduate jobs.


This studentship focuses on investigating future battery markets and the need for thermal management (cooling & heating) of battery systems. The work-plan includes assessment of market potential of alternative cell, module and pack construction and assessing market potential of a module assembly technology based around the Tier 1 supplier’s core manufacturing competency. The studentship will explore the characteristics and development of suitable solutions for a Battery Thermal Management product.

The successful candidate will be involved in: defining needs, concept development, value engineering, solution simulation, design prototyping and testing of battery cooling approaches.

As an Engineering Doctorate, this project has a unique positioning between academic research and industrial application, with an emphasis on innovation and addressing real world issues, with time split between both organisations. You will have full access to state-of-the-art facilities in WMG’s Energy Innovation Centre as well as the Tier 1 supplier’s product development expertise. 

Entry Requirements


Candidates should have a minimum of an upper second (2.1) honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject e.g. electrical, materials, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace or mechanical engineering. Previous experience of working on this type of research is highly desirable.

  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new software quickly
  • Self-motivated, capable of working with minimal guidance and supervision, and within a team.
  • Enthusiasm for the subject
  • A fundamental level of understanding of materials (not essential)

Due to funding regulations this project is currently open to Home/EU students only.

The Studentship

Qualifying students receive an attractive enhanced stipend which could be tax and NI free depending on your personal circumstances, paid by the Centre and topped up by a contribution from Sponsoring Company. For 2019 this totals approximately £20,000 per annum.

The funding is for four years and will also cover University tuition fees and all course fees as well as a travel allowance to attend courses.
