We are looking for a Research Associate to carry out research into the design and fabrication of novel optical fibres and fibre devices

You will be based in the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials at the University of Bath under the supervision of Prof Tim Birks and Dr Jim Stone, and work closely with several interdisciplinary academic partners.

The research is in pursuit of separate projects applying fibre photonics to medicine and astronomical instrumentation, but the techniques employed are closely related. For the medical applications, you will be part of the Proteus interdisciplinary research collaboration ( and work closely with clinical partners at the University of Edinburgh to translate your work into the clinic during the course of the project.

You will use the state of the art fibre fabrication facility at the University of Bath to design and fabricate optical fibres. You will build these into prototype devices and be expected to carry out experiments both in laboratories at the University of Bath and at partnering institutions.

The overall aim of the position will be to bring fundamental optical fibre research from the lab into the clinic and the observatory as appropriate, and then on to exploitation.

This is a fixed-term role available for 30 months.
