The University of Aberdeen, School of Geosciences, seeks to appoint an established or developing scientist in the growing field of ancient biomolecules to complement and expand upon our research expertise in a newly-created full-time post in the Department of Archaeology.
The principle duties of this role will be to contribute to the Departments thriving bioarchaeology research strand through the production of world class, high impact research. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to existing Department of Archaeology undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and develop and implement new MSc provision in Ancient Biomolecules.
The candidate will also undertake Departmental administrative responsibilities and contribute to research leadership through the supervision of undergraduate and post-graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers.
Applicants should have a postgraduate degree in biological sciences, chemistry or archaeology, or equivalent experience, and a PhD in the application of molecular methods in archaeology. They should have a growing body of high-quality research publications in the application of genetics and/or proteomics to the study of the human past and the ability to attract major research funding. At least two recent or forthcoming publications are expected to be judged as world-leading (4*) or internationally-excellent (3*) in the 2021 research excellence framework.
The successful candidate will possess an extensive knowledge of biomolecular archaeology and be able to teach biomolecular research/bioarchaeology to archaeologists, underpinning their relevance to archaeological questions/topics/issues. A broader knowledge of archaeological science/archaeology would also be welcome, as the new role may be expected to teach material at a range of levels as well as more specialised courses. Ideally, the candidate would have some prior experience of teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate or postgraduate level or in a similar context.
Candidates should be capable of communicating to a variety of different audiences, be able to work as part of a team, and be willing to work collaboratively with colleagues in Archaeology and other disciplines in the School and University.
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7 salary scale (£40,792 - £48,676 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
