The independent research group Adaptive Memory (led by Dr Roland Benoit) at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS) in Leipzig, Germany, invites applications for up to two

Postdoctoral positions

Adaptive memory and prefrontal cortex

Our research seeks to understand adaptive memory processes, with an emphasis on prefrontal cortex (PFC) functioning. We focus on three lines of research:

  • how the schema functions supported by the medial PFC augment the episodic memory functions supported by the medial temporal lobes (e.g. Benoit et al., PNAS, 2014),
  • how we intentionally forget unwanted memories (e.g. Benoit & Anderson, Neuron, 2012; Benoit et al., PNAS, 2016), and
  • how episodic simulations can shape our models of the world and influence decisions (e.g. Benoit et al., Nature Communications, in press; Benoit et al., J Neuroscience, 2011).

The research combines novel cognitive procedures with a range of neuroscience methods, including fMRI and MRS (at 3T and 7T), fusion RSA of fMRI and MEG data, neuromodulation (tDCS and TMS), computational modelling, and examinations of patients with focal brain lesions. There are quite a few degrees of freedom for the development of new ideas and experimental approaches.

Successful applicants will have a passion for understanding episodic memory and cognitive control, and are able to demonstrate an outstanding academic record. In addition, the ideal applicant will have strong expertise in at least one of the mentioned methods. Candidates must have, or expect, a PhD (or equivalent) in neuroscience, cognitive science, experimental psychology, or a related field.

The starting date is flexible, though preferably in spring/early summer 2019. The positions are initially for two years with a possible extension. Remuneration is based on the pay scale of the Max Planck Society. There are no teaching obligations.

The MPI CBS is equipped with a 7T MRI scanner, several 3T MRI scanners (including a Connectom), a 306-channel MEG, TMS and tDCS labs, several EEG suites, virtual reality, and eye-tracking. The institute hosts a vibrant and engaging community of international researchers from diverse backgrounds. The working language is English. Leipzig has been called “Germany’s new cultural hotspot“ (the Guardian) and is located just a short train ride south of Berlin.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society strives for gender equity and welcomes applications from all backgrounds.

To apply please submit the following documents as a single PDF file: curriculum vitae, a description of your qualifications and future research interests with respect to the group’s agenda (ideally with detailed study ideas), contact information of two referees, and up to three of your publications. Application is via our online system at https://www.cbs.mpg.de/vacancies/open-positions (subject heading: “PD 07/19”). The positions will remain open until they have been filled. All applications received by the 15th of May 2019 will be considered.

For further details and an informal discussion, please do not hesitate to contact Dr Roland Benoit at rbenoit@cbs.mpg.de and see https://www.cbs.mpg.de/independent-research-groups/adaptive-memory.
