Dr Markus Kuhn, at the Department of Computer Science and Technology (the Computer Laboratory), is able to offer a funded PhD studentship, beginning October 2019.
This doctoral studentship is for UK applicants interested in working on a PhD thesis in the area of hardware side-channel security, exploring techniques to infer or eavesdrop confidential information processed in a computer device, picked up at a distance from its unintentional electro-magnetic emissions (power analysis attacks, electro-magnetic analysis, Tempest attacks), ideally with a focus on software-defined radio techniques and active attacks (e.g., information extraction from radio-frequency backscatter).
This opening is suitable for a candidate with a Bachelor or Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics. Applicants must have very good skills in programming and linear algebra, and demonstrate some background in digital signal processing, communications engineering, electronics, cryptography, machine learning or mathematical statistics. Candidates need to meet all prerequisites for admission to the PhD in Computer Science (please refer to: https://www.cst.cam.ac.uk/admissions/phd ).

The PhD studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and provide a tax-free stipend for 3.5 years covering at least the EPSRC recommended rate of maintenance, plus a competitive bonus. It also includes a budget for travel and hardware experiments.
This studentship is funded by HM government and is offered under the condition that the student is able to obtain a security clearance. Therefore, applicants should be UK nationals or at least have been resident in the UK for ten years.
