The quest for new inorganic functional materials (such as those possessing electronic, magnetic or ionic properties) plays an important role in developing future technologies such as energy or data storage. Ceramic materials show continued interest for the wide range of physical properties they display, and their chemical flexibility. One approach to materials discovery gaining interest is to combine multiple anions in order to tune material properties, for example in metal oxide-fluorides. The relationship between the additional structural freedom introduced by anion mixing and functional properties is an area of active research.
This project will explore the synthesis of new solid-state transition metal oxyfluoride materials, and characterisation of their atomic structure and physical properties. This work will combine data-driven computational approaches for materials prediction, experimental synthesis and characterisation of promising compounds. The exact balance of computational and experimental approaches will be tailored to fit the interests and abilities of the successful candidate. The position will provide excellent training across a broad range of experimental and computational methods in materials chemistry. Example experimental techniques include high-temperature solid-state synthesis, topotactic fluorination, x-ray and neutron crystallography and variable temperature physical property characterisation (in conjunction with the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions, University of Edinburgh), while computational methods include structural database mining and machine learning.
