Contract Type: Short term. Up to one week per month.

  • Tutors can teach one or both courses: - Python: Data Analysis and Programming; and/or Machine Learning with R
  • Short-term contract with possibility of extension
  • You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners who teach and manage AIR Courses, including IT professionals, lawyers, psychologists and geneticists
  • You will be working towards helping people build interdisciplinary practical skills

About the opportunities

Due to increased demand for our AIR Courses – interdisciplinary intensive short courses – at Goldsmiths, University of London, we have opportunities for a tutor (and possibly two) with expertise in Python Programming; and Machine Learning with R to teach one or both of these courses. Depending on demand, this opportunity can turn into a more permanent role (e.g. annual contract). The courses are either 5-day short courses or evening courses over four weeks (two evenings per week).

About you

Qualifications. Have completed, or currently undertaking, a PhD in Computer Science or similar. If not, strong evidence of independent learning and a strong understanding of the principles of computer science, as well as some related formal education.

Experience. Experience in tutoring or teaching (not necessarily programming related); and experience using either Python or R languages. Some understanding of statistics is also desirable. Additionally, evidence of capability for independent learning of either new programming languages or modules is desirable.

Knowledge. Solid understanding of Python, and/or Machine Learning with R.

Additional skills. Include, the ability to present information to groups verbally, and to guiding students through new concepts; excellent communication, consultative and interpersonal skills – for example, the role requires the tutor  to help students with coding problems as they run into them, and  to deal calmly with concerns and problems raised by students. Additionally, the tutor is expected to maintain a relaxed teaching atmosphere in which students are made to feel welcome and valued.
