About the role

One of the finest and most interdisciplinary research and teaching departments in the UK (RAE2008/REF2014), the School of Museum Studies is recognised as at the global forefront in its field. It is a collective of committed individuals from a range of disciplinary backgrounds – sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, art history, geography, media and communication studies, learning technology, cultural policy and others – who put museums, galleries and heritage at the centre of debates on social justice, health and wellbeing, development and conflict, nation-making, cultural policy, digital change, the artworld, institutionalism, curatorial practice and more.

We are now looking to expand and diversify our team, and we are seeking talented people from both within and beyond the museum studies field.

We have very high levels of staff retention and offer a remarkable platform for a distinctive and internationally-engaged career. To join us, you must be committed to delivering research of the highest quality and integrity, to providing exceptional student-centred learning and to the continued flourishing of our mutually supportive, inclusive and cohesive working environment.

About you

You will have a PhD in one of the many areas relevant to the study of museums and related cultural institutions, phenomena and concerns. You will have an exceptional track record of the highest quality research, including published and/or in press outputs likely to meet the 4* quality criteria and submission requirements of REF2021. You will have excellent, aspirational vision and a clear plan for your future research. You will embrace opportunities for international engagement and collaboration. You will demonstrate a steadfast commitment to outstanding student experience and to international students (all our teaching is postgraduate). You will be willing and able to supervise PhD students across a range of topics.

We are looking for those with an unwavering dedication to excellence and integrity in research and teaching, who will become committed, fully active members of our collegiate, inclusive School.
