Manchester Metropolitan University - Name External Value Sociology

Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and one of the most popular cities for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries – 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a large, multidisciplinary community embracing Humanities, Social Sciences and the Manchester School of Art. With around 10,000 students, the Faculty has a portfolio of quality provision in both Education and Research, with areas of world-leading performance.

The Department of Sociology is one of the largest in the UK. We have an ambitious and growing research portfolio with substantial income generation and offer a vibrant environment for research that aspires to be of real world benefit.

We have a number of research centres housed within the department, with this role offering strategic leadership and development to the Substance Use and Addictive Behaviours (SUAB) research centre. SUAB aims to develop and conduct research and related activities that lead to better service for people experiencing problematic substance abuse.

We are looking for a Professor to join our department to lead a multi-disciplinary team and offer inspiring and strategic leadership. We aim to position SUAB as a nationally leading centre for research within this field and you will play a key part in achieving this.

You will bring a proven ability to generate significant external income through submission of relevant bids and ensure a steady pipeline of publications that achieve internationally excellent and world-class recognition. Holding a doctoral qualification or equivalent, you will be able to provide outstanding personal research and leadership whilst leading your team and managing projects. Naturally, your personal research will be at a high level of academic distinction, as recognised by the REF and elsewhere.
