A full time research specialist position for a Laboratory Officer in Charge is available at the EMBL Heidelberg to join the newly established group of Dr. Sebastian Eustermann. The Eustermann laboratory specializes on cryo-electron microscopy and integrative systems approaches to explore the molecular mechanisms by which eukaryotic genomes are organised into chromatin.

Your role

You will manage the laboratory: overseeing its operation on a daily basis, working closely together with the group leader in coordinating and supporting PhD students and postdocs in meeting the research goals of the laboratory. You are expected to learn innovative techniques, participate in scientific meetings and implement novel workflows, while you will enjoy providing training and guidance to other group members. You will also benefit from the highly collaborative research environment at the EMBL by pursuing long-term collaborations with world-class core-facilities including the protein expression and cryoEM imaging facilities.

If you don’t have a PhD, but you do have a university or technical school degree, you will be considered depending on your experience and/or potential for development. You should also have a strong background in at least one or more of the following areas:

  • heterologous expression and purification of multi-subunit protein complexes
  • molecular biology of chromatin
  • advanced methods in molecular biology and biochemistry
  • structure determination by cryo-electron microscopy or x-ray crystallography

You should be very well organized, passionate about laboratory management and able to work independently. The key selection criterion will be the motivation and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to support ongoing research efforts with a high level of intellectual creativity, persistence and dedication. You must have excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills. Fluency in English is required.

Experience in genetics, design of protein activity assays , mammalian cell culture, imaging and image analysis, programming or statistics will be extremely valuable, but training will be provided if needed.
