Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Creative Writing (Fiction) in the Department of English.
The successful candidate will join a team of prize-winning writers in the department: Lavinia Greenlaw, Douglas Cowie, Benjamin Markovits, Redell Olsen, Adam Roberts, Nikita Lalwani, Prudence Bussey-Chamberlain, Nick Pierpan, and Nadifa Mohamed. Royal Holloway is consistently in the top 10 of UK Universities for Creative Writing, 5th in the most recent Complete University Guide table. The department is home to no less than seven Fellows of the Royal Society of Literature. The post has been created by the departure of Jo Shapcott, FRSL and the recipient of numerous international awards, including the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. Jo has given many years of committed service to Royal Holloway, and the new appointee will be expected to make a significant contribution to the wold-leading team in Creative Writing which she helped to establish. The appointee will be one of two new permanent appointments to join the department at an exciting time of investment and expansion in Creative Writing at both our Egham and Bedford Square locations.
You will have an international profile as a fiction writer or demonstrable potential to become a leading international fiction writer; you will have a strong publication record and successful experience of teaching at University level, preferably including experience of teaching on literary critical courses. The department has nurtured an illustrious roll call of alumni to become successful writers. You will have demonstrated the ability to work energetically with others in teaching and/or administration.
The successful candidate may be asked to teach at BA and/or MA level. The appointee will be expected to publish and to teach in their specialist area and may be asked to teach on the critical side of our undergraduate programmes; you will foster the work of students seeking publication and supervise research students in Creative Writing. The appointee will have a strong sense of citizenship and a commitment to furthering the collective success of the English department.
This is a permanent post, available from September 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. This post may be based at College’s main site in Egham (where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London), and/or at the College’s central London building in Bedford Square WC1, where our highly successful MA in Creative Writing is based.
