Project Outline:

Manufacturing process simulation is a critical tool to predict defect formation and contribute to the optimisation of the manufacturing process. The drive from major OEMs in the aerospace and defence sectors is to develop an entire process chain capable of delivering right first time, defect-free components. The potential for benefits in terms of production time and cost reduction is very significant. In order to meet such an ambitious target, the NCC has been investing into several research activities aiming at generating accurate digital twins of the individual manufacturing stages. The aim of this EngD project is the definition, design and implementation of a framework that integrates such individual stages within a single simulated process chain. It is envisaged that this will include adoption of machine learning and process sensing tools.

In the first 12 months, the research work is likely to include the following activities:

  • Gap analysis and framework definition. In this task the project roadmap will be evaluated and a gap analysis will be carried out investigating current research programmes and potential collaboration with other projects carrying out work in the same area.
  • Development/implementation of manufacturing process framework for entire process chain. In this task interfaces between different process models will be developed and the entire simulation framework will be implemented on a case study.
  • Coupon level validation. A sub-component will be manufactured using process monitoring and the experimental data will be compared with the simulation results.

Please note that this project is not available to international students due to tier 4 visa requirements.

Applicants with ‘home student’ status and holding or about to graduate with a first or 2.1 degree in structural or chemical engineering, materials science or physical sciences.
