Electronics and Radar Engineer

Rothamsted Research

Location: Harpenden
Salary: £37,890 to £41,438 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 24th July 2019
Closes: 27th September 2019
Overview Of Role

We have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced Electronics and Radar Engineer at Rothamsted Research to lead our development and use of advanced digital sensor technologies. This is a key role that will develop our capability to innovate in areas related to the use of IoT and other sensor technologies to monitor the dynamics of agricultural systems and their response to different farming practices and climate change.

Rothamsted has been a pioneer in the development of radar sensors for monitoring the migration and movement of insects; both pest and beneficial species. We have also invented and developed monitoring devices for detecting crop diseases. In recent years, new detection devices and sensor technologies have emerged that will enable us to build on this pioneering work in pest and disease monitoring and create new sources of data that can be exploited by our data scientists to create innovative forecasting tools, that will benefit both researchers and farmers. In other areas of Rothamsted science, real-time sensors and digital devices, including those based on IoT technologies, are also playing an increasingly important role and we wish to expand our use of these technologies more broadly.

Initially the post-holder will complete the development of a new generation of vertical radar sensors operating in the millimetre microwave spectrum for monitoring the concentration of small insects migrating at different heights in the atmosphere. They will also be expected to lead our development and use of a range of advanced digital sensors across all Rothamsted science and to build effective relationships with the electronic engineering departments in our partner Universities.

We anticipate that the successful applicant will have a post-graduate degree in electronic engineering, or equivalent professional experience, and be familiar with the development and application of digital sensor technologies – preferably based on IoT approaches. Ideally, they would also be familiar with radar-based sensors and have experience with microwave RF systems. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate leadership with a flexible and professional approach and be able to communicate effectively with non-specialist colleagues and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The successful applicant will interact closely with a wide range of researchers at RRes including our ecologists, plant scientists, crop protection specialists, livestock scientists, modellers, statisticians and informatics teams.

This is a full-time tenure-track appointment, initially for 4 years and will be subject to a progress and impact review in the final year.

Rothamsted Research values its commitment to equality and diversity in its workforce and we particularly encourage applications from women, disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates, as these groups are currently under-represented within the organisation.
