Erasmus School of Law (ESL) employs 490 members of staff and is attended by around 5000 students. ESL offers bachelor programmes in Law, Tax Law and Criminology, with a focus on active academic learning. Students can subsequently choose from a wide variety of master programmes. ESL also collaborates in Double Degree programmes combining law and (business) economics or law and business administration and is one of the founders of the European Master in Law & Economics. Once students have completed their master’s degree, they may choose from several postgraduate tracks provided by Erasmus School of Law (in collaboration with Erasmus Academy and others).
The fundamental premise underlying academic research conducted at Erasmus School of Law is that law cannot be considered in splendid isolation or as an end in itself. It is embedded in an economic and social context that shapes law. At the same time, law itself shapes society and defines economic relationships. In line with this vision, our mission is to conduct innovative research on the function of law in its economic and social context. This research has a strong social and business-driven orientation. Erasmus School of Law is committed to promoting international and interdisciplinary research, as shown by its participation in several international research collaborations. The PhD programmes at Erasmus School of Law are also firmly embedded in international networks. Erasmus Graduate School of Law is part of the Association of Transnational Law School (ATLAS), which aims to bring together talented doctoral students in the field of law. Erasmus School of Law is also part of the prestigious European Doctorate in Law and Economics Programme (EDLE) as well as the Marie Curie European Training Network on EU Trade and Investment Policy (EUTIP).

Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics (RILE)
Since its start in 2000 RILE as part of ESL has grown considerably. There are currently eight chairs:
In addition RILE has several associate and assistant professors, post-docs and a considerable number of PhD students, which makes RILE one of the largest Law and Economics groups worldwide and a vibrant research community of approximately 30 scholars (incl. PhDs) active in the domain of Law and Economics.
The Law and Economics performed at RILE has a very strong policy orientation. This is directly related to the fact that RILE considers itself a central institute within ESL. RILE sees it as an important task to showcase the usefulness of the economic approach to the larger legal community, not only within the Netherlands, but also within Europe and at a global level. We expect the successful candidate to be able to fit into this particular RILE approach of having a strong focus on legal policy issues.
RILE collaborates intensively with many colleagues and institutes within ESL as far as research and teaching is concerned. For example, RILE collaborates closely with the colleagues from the Rotterdam Institute of Private Law (RIPL) within the framework of the research programme Behavioural Approaches to Contract and Tort (BACT).
RILE has strong connections with other Law and Economics colleagues in Europe and worldwide. This collaboration is especially important within the framework of the European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) and the European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE). In addition, RILE functions actively in international research networks, inter alia in the European Association of Law and Economics, various Jean Monnet Actions of the EU and other international frameworks.
RILE also provides input for teaching in the regular Bachelor and Master programs of ESL and RILE professors equally are engaged in joint supervision of PhD students.
We expect from the new associate professor to have a broad interest in and knowledge of the domain of Law and Economics and to have evident insights in the various specializations within Law and Economics (like Empirical Legal Studies, Public Choice, European Integration or Corporate Governance) in order to be able to liaise with colleagues at the institute. We expect the candidate to develop an important international networking function.
The associate professor is expected to play an active role in fulfilling the teaching obligations of the RILE on the Bachelor, Master and PhD-level. The teaching activities are embedded within the regular curriculum of ESL as well as the EMLE and the EDLE.
The specific teaching obligations will be further discussed with potential candidates. However, within the framework of the EMLE there is the obligation to teach a course. It is expected that the associate professor can fulfil that task in an appropriate and insightful way. Teaching in the EMLE and EDLE is in English; in the regular curriculum of ESL teaching is possible in Dutch or in English. It is expected that candidates can prove teaching qualifications by appropriate documents (teaching evaluations etc.)
The candidate is expected to contribute substantially to the policy orientated research of RILE. It is considered important that the research of the candidate is not only of a high level, published in internationally renowned refereed journals, but also of interest to both lawyers and economists.
From the associate professor it is expected that she or he is able to apply for research grants (for example NWO, Erasmus plus etc.). A proven track record of research grants is an advantage. Successful grant applications will be a criterion for granting tenure.
It is expected that the associate professor takes part in the diverse management tasks of the RILE, EDLE and occasionally within the faculty. This comprises the organization of teaching activities, the organization of research activities, for example in the BACT, or other research excellence programs at the faculty level. It is taken into account that the successful candidate has a temporary position. Therefore, the workload of management tasks will be reasonable.

Terms of employments
A position as associate professor with the possibility of tenure in a vibrant research environment with ample opportunities to further develop as a top-researcher.
The start of the tenure track, i.e. after having been appointed as associate professor, includes the composition of a development plan by the associate professor. In the development plan the candidate elaborates what activities will be undertaken and what results are expected to be reached, with the ultimate aim to qualify as full professor. The tenure track is expected to take 5 years. Assessment criteria are good teaching evaluations, publishing in high ranked journals and being successful in getting research grants.
The monthly salary of the associate professor is € 5,039 minimum and € 6,738 maximum gross per month for a full time position of 38 hours a week (scale 13 or 14).
